Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s smaller parks.  The dramatic western escarpment of the Gregory Rift Valley forms the park’s western border.  On the east is the soda Lake Manyara covering a third of the park.  The size of the lake varies significantly during the wet and dry seasons.  The Lake shores attract an abundant birdlife, including the pink flamingos the park is famous for, waterfowls and migrant species.  A total of 400 bird species can be spotted at Manyara.   The character of the vegetation in Lake Manyara varies from savanna grasslands to swampland to perennial underground water fed forest.  With its 11 ecosystems, Lake Manyara supports one of the highest biomass densities of large mammals in the world.  Whether it’s the rare tree climbing lions or matriarch elephant herds the park was established to protect, or the largest troops of Olive baboons in Tanzania, Manyara exposes one to a wilderness in a very different natural environment.
